Description, therapeutic skills, etc. :

Vincent Rafis, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice. His office is located in the Marais, Paris.

Dr. Rafis works with late adolescents and adults, and especially with international clients facing the challenges of a life away from home.

Dr. Rafis applies a pragmatic, collaborative and integrative approach, primarily based on two therapeutic methods: psychodynamic therapy and prolonged exposure therapy. Through them, he has specialized in helping his clients manage events with a strong emotional impact, and cope with situations related to trauma and violence.

For his fellow psychoanalysts, psychologists, and psychotherapists, as well as for care professionals in the broad sense, Dr. Rafis also offers clinical supervision.

Specializations (i.e., ADHD, substance use):

- Psychodynamic therapy:

Psychodynamic therapy and psychoanalysis are useful for every person who believes that his or her life could be calmer, richer and more satisfying.

By investigating the unconscious meanings at the core of language, dreams and memories, free association analysis helps to release inhibitions and to equip oneself in order to operate more successfully under day-to-day circumstances. Clients are also encouraged to evaluate how social or family backgrounds have made them who they are, in order to act upon it.

Through the building of a strong therapeutic alliance, this method thus offers the courage to deal with stress and hurt, but also, more importantly, to acknowledge the need for a new life.

- Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)

PE is a therapy whose goal is to overcome trauma and the difficulties that come with it.

Trauma is an experience of violence that produces a psychic "injury" in the victim, which causes damages that can arise in daily life through post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

PE aims to reduce the symptoms of PTSD by setting up a habituation protocol leading to desensitization. In doing so, it instills confidence and a sense of mastery, improves various aspects of daily functioning, increases client's ability to cope with courage rather than fearfulness when facing stress, and improves their ability to discriminate safe and unsafe situations.

Based on basic behavioral principles, PE is empirically validated, with more than 20 years of research attesting to its efficiency.
